Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)

After Surgery
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) Weight Loss Surgery has evolved significantly over the past several decades. Traditionally, abdominal surgery required a single large incision to access the surgical site. This often meant a long recovery period, an increased risk of complications such as wound infections, and significant post-operative pain. Beginning in the 1980's, laparoscopic surgery was introduced, enabling surgeons to perform operations with several very small skin incisions instead of one large incision. This innovation led to a decreased risk of wound infection, quicker recovery, and less post-operative pain compared to traditional open surgery. Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is one of the latest advancements in minimally-invasive surgery. It is a novel technique where various surgical procedures are performed through a single abdominal incision, typically through the umbilicus (belly button).

SILS is performed in a hospital operating room. The surgeon makes one small incision through the umbilicus and fills the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. A camera and multiple operating instruments are placed through the incision and the surgical procedure is performed. At the termination of the procedure, the skin incision is closed with absorbable sutures, resulting in a small scar in the umbilicus. Many patients are discharged home the same day or within 23 hours.

Most patients who are candidates for laparoscopic surgery are also candidates for SILS. SILS can be performed for various surgical conditions, including bariatric surgery (gastric banding including the Lap-Band® and sleeve gastrectomy), gall bladder removal (cholecystectomy), appendix removal (appendectomy), and others. At Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss, our surgeons are experienced in SILS.
